Chinese green teas, grade by grade
An export green tea’s code tells you its shape, its sorting and its strength. Here are our four core grades and what each brings to the glass.
Chunmee — the “eyebrow” tea
Chunmee (珍眉) means “precious eyebrows”. The leaf is rolled into a long curve. Depending on the sort, it gives a fine, silky tea (4011), a balanced one (41022) or a powerful one (9371).
Gunpowder — the “pearl” tea
Gunpowder (珠茶, “pearl tea”) is rolled into small balls. It keeps very well, opens slowly and stands up to several brews: it is the tea of long ceremonies.
